Week Six Blog Post

I was given lots of great feedback by Mary during our conversation on Friday.  The most important suggestion is that I account for inflation every time I include a dollar amount.  In my timeline, I have plenty of monetary values, but without accounting for inflation, it’s hard to get a sense of how much that amount really is.  Sure, Nolan Ryan became the first player to make over $1 million per season in 1979, but how much was that really worth in 1979?  I need to be consistent with including inflation data in order for the information to be digested easier.

Another suggestion that I received also mainly pertained to my timeline.  In the timeline, there are a lot of events where I write more than what will fit on the page, forcing the user to scroll.  I don’t want to be too wordy, but I also want to include everything I deem important.  Mary suggested that I break the text up into paragraphs and prioritize the most useful info.  That way, even if the readers get bored and don’t want to scroll, they will at least have seen the most important things.

A useful recommendation that did not pertain to my timeline was directed towards the glossary section.  Mary pointed out that I should use anchors, hyperlinks, and/or popups for each term in the glossary.  This would make it much simpler to access definitions and learn about each term, which really is the ultimate goal of the glossary.

Overall, reviewing with Mary on Friday was incredibly helpful.  Not only did I hear fantastic feedback from her, but I also noticed things on my own that need changing or fixing just by discussing it out loud with someone else.  As we enter the home stretch, the process of review is going to be essential if I am to put out the best product possible.
