Week Five Blog Post

The first digital tool that I will be using in my project is TimelineJS.  TimelineJS is a simple way to construct a timeline about any topic.  I am using this tool to tell the history of MLB contracts.  Before I dive into the numbers, relationships, and mathematical models, I think it is important to reflect on how far Major League Baseball has come.  That’s the best way to fully understand what free agency means to the game of baseball.  TimelineJS is great because of its simplicity.  Everything is built through a Google Sheet template, and it is incredibly user-friendly.  It’s not too basic, but it’s not overwhelmingly advanced either.

Next, I will be using Tableau in my project.  Tableau combines a user-friendly interface with lots of options and details.  I will be using Tableau to create visualizations, show relationships, and implement an interactive model.  Tableau is useful because it requires no knowledge of coding.  I would not want to spend time learning or re-learning how to code just so I can create visualizations.

Lastly, I will be creating my site through WordPress.  Like TimelineJS, I value the ease with which I can use WordPress.  I also think it is a better fit for my project than StoryMap or Scalar.  StoryMap would not be ideal because I’m not using any maps, and Scalar is much more complicated than WordPress.  Additionally, both are too linear for my taste.  I want the viewer to have the freedom to explore instead of being forced down a specific path.
